History of HYC

Since opening in July 2000, The Hillcrest Youth Center has served more than 4,500 youth. The HYC is the only drop-in facility for LGBTQ youth in San Diego County. The Hillcrest Youth Center offers cyber/computer training, health education, basic financial education, diversity and cultural awareness workshops and seminars, youth leadership training, case management, HIV prevention education, life skills training workshops, discussion groups, counseling services, and social activities. This is an impressive list of programs and services and we are extremely proud of what we offer.

However, the heart of what The Hillcrest Youth Center offers is much larger than our excellent programs. The HYC is committed to providing safe space, adult leadership, and educational opportunities for high-risk youth to develop into responsible, productive and fully participating citizens.

The provision of a safe and educational environment allows at-risk youth to access the information and skills necessary for them to develop appropriate work, health and citizenship habits. The Hillcrest Youth Center operates to serve youth who are at highest risk for negative outcomes. The scientific data on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth continues to find that these youth are at a higher risk for suicide; drug and alcohol abuse; hate crimes; smoking; early high-school drop out; homelessness; sexual assault; HIV infection; depression and a variety of other negative health consequences.

Youth come to the HYC from all over the county, including La Jolla, Rancho Bernardo, Sherman Heights, Pacific Beach, Mission Hills, Hillcrest, South Bay, Spring Valley, El Cajon, and Lakeside. Some of the youth we serve come from our most affluent homes, some are homeless, but most are low-income and underserved.
